Getting baby furniture for the nursery is necessary, but can get very costly.  Although it is tempting to buy a used baby crib or accept your friends offer to take theirs, it is critical for you to know about The New Crib Standard from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).  In 2007, CPSC recalled more than 11 million dangerous cribs.  In 2000, drop-side cribs with detaching side rails were connected to at least 32 infant suffocation and strangulation deaths.  In addition, there were several deaths that occurred due to faulty or defective crib hardware.

On June 28, 2011, new federal safety standards made it mandatory that all cribs manufactured and sold, which includes cribs for resale, must comply with the new regulations enforced by CPSC.  The new rules apply to full-size and non-full-size cribs, and prohibit manufacturers, distributors, importers and retailers from selling traditional drop-side rail cribs.  In addition, CPSC standards require manufacturers to strengthen crib slats and mattress supports, improve quality of hardware and demand more rigorous testing.

In the last couple years, manufacturers have created a new generation of baby cribs that adhere to the safest standards in the world.  Top producers such as DaVinci, Babyletto, Nurseryworks, Storkcraft and more have created a new breed of stylish baby cribs at the highest level of safety.  It is truly the biggest and most important major safety revision in more than 30 years.

Now, when it comes to buying a used crib, you will be saving money, but at what costs?  In my opinion, you are taking a huge risk that is just not worth it.  I completely understand the financial concern.  As a mother of 2, I am as frugal as it gets.  But I would strongly consider the other cost-saving alternatives that will provide the most excellent safety standards and help appease financial concerns.  For example, if your budget is less than $200, you can opt for a mini crib that is slightly smaller than a full-size crib.  If your budget is a little more, you can still get a beautiful full size crib from affordable and reliable manufacturers like DaVinci, Storkcraft, Delta and more.

Whatever your needs are, there is a new baby crib out there that will fit your financial budget and provide the highest level of safety for your precious baby.  Buying a used baby crib is not like buying a used car.  Your chlid’s life is at stake.  With the new required safety standards, you are providing the safest sleep environment for your newborn baby at affordable pricing.  Don’t be a statistic, be responsible.
